Today we will know what is Engine/lubricating oil and what is the purpose of using lubricating oil?
Lubricating oil is a liquid lubricant that creates a thin membrane or screen between two parts of a machine or engine in relative motion, partially or completely preventing the two surfaces from making direct contact. By introducing slippage between the two parts, heat generation and loss due to friction is greatly reduced.
Purpose of lubricating oil:
1. The main function of lubricating oil is to keep the moving parts of the engine slippery to reduce frictional wear and reduce power loss.
2. Lubricating oil maintains lubrication between the rotating parts and helps the shaft rotate smoothly between the bearings.
3. Reduces friction between parts or prevents wear.
4. Reduces frictional heat of rotating parts.
5. Keeps rotating parts cool and prevents burns.
6. Does not allow rotating parts to be in direct contact, so frictional noise cannot be generated.
7. The lubricant acts as a sealing agent between the two parts, and does not allow any other material to penetrate.
8. Removes metal particles and dirt caused by friction.
9. Acts as a damping agent by absorbing shocks caused by sudden loads.
10. Lubricating oil reduces engine noise by absorbing noise from bearings and other parts.
11. Lube oil always covers bearings and other parts. As a result, all those parts are protected from rusting.
